I have always been a relatively healthy eater, but as of recently, I have developed some not-so-good habits with respect to eating sweets and desserts. The habits developed like any habits do, because I started eating them consistently and the process became routine.
We often develop detrimental habits in our engineering careers such as checking e-mails too frequently, submitting designs without asking others to check them, or skipping professional society meetings. Doing these enough times will make them appear to be part of our normal routine, however they are really just bad habits that are negatively affecting our career development.
So what can you do to break these bad habits?
Here’s how I am breaking my habit of eating too many sweets; I believe that you can use the same methodology for breaking ANY bad habit. In order to break a bad habit, you MUST replace it with another habit, preferably a good one!
In my case, at the beginning of each week, I cut up cucumbers and put them in a Tupperware in the refrigerator and then any time I get the urge to eat a sweet, instead I eat some cucumbers. Not only is this helping to eliminate my bad habit, but also it is instilling a new one of eating healthier snacks throughout the day.
I know this sounds extremely simple, maybe even too simple, but it works. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself.
Start right now and think of one good habit you can use to replace a bad habit that you have developed. Remember, replacing just one bad habit can have a HUGE impact on your career and life and could literally accelerate your career or personal development by several years.
