This is a post by Anthony Fasano, PE.
Over the last five years, I have had the pleasure of providing one-on-one career coaching services to hundreds of engineers, including both members and nonmembers of the Institute for Engineering Career Development (IECD).
Many of them I have been able to help change their entire mindset and approach to their engineering career and life in just 30 minutes or less. This and the fact that I love to coach and inspire engineers have led me to embark upon a new journey in my own career and start a podcast entitled The Engineering Career Coach, which will be unlike any other podcast. Here are the reasons why I chose to do this, how it will work, and how you can become one of my first guests.
I Want Engineers to Experience the Power of Coaching
In one of my coaching sessions, I helped a young engineer to realize, within 15 minutes, that deep down inside she wanted to be in engineering education rather than design. She started on her new career path immediately.
I say this not to brag, but to stress the importance of seeking guidance and coaching in your career and life. Most engineers don’t understand the power of one-on-one coaching, or even if they think they do, they haven’t experienced it. This podcast will change that.
Executive Coaching Is Expensive
Until the IECD came along, it was virtually impossible for an engineer to seek executive coaching without having to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars. While I believe that these fees are totally worth it for the results coaching provides, most engineers can’t afford that. This podcast will allow many engineers to experience the power of coaching firsthand and thousands to experience it vicariously as listeners.
Here’s How It Works
The Engineering Career Coach podcast will kick off in September of 2013, consisting of shows that last approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Each show will include strategies on a specific topic (i.e., goal setting, networking, work-life balance, etc.), but also feature an actual coaching session with one engineer and myself. The shows are going to feature engineers of all different experience levels who are trying to overcome different challenges and pursue different goals. Topics might include how to find a job, how to deal with a difficult supervisor, how to transition from engineer to manager, how to launch your career as a recent engineering graduate, and how to reinvent as an executive, etc. PLEASE NOTE ALL GUESTS WILL BE ANONYMOUS ON THE SHOW.
How You Can Appear on the Show
All you have to do to appear on the show is be an engineer and have a pulse. More seriously, though, you can either be an engineering student or a practicing engineer of any age, in any location, with a specific challenge that you are trying to overcome in your career or a specific goal you are pursuing and would like advice on how to achieve it quickly.
